This is a scarce and lovely Japanese temple find, a gold gilt and lacquered wooden horse crowned or horse headed Kanon (Guan yin) and Bodhisattva standing tall and with hands clasped in adoration prayer mudra, which symbolically signifies compassion and healing powers.
It is signed front and back in red lacquer with posthumous Buddhist names- a feature rarely found today.
Kannon (Sanskrit: Avalokiteshvara), the bodhisattva of compassion, appears in six different incarnations, one for each of the six realms of existence. The multiple faces and arms are signs of the bodhisattva’s supernatural powers. The outwardly fierce Horse-headed (Batō) Kannon was popular in Japanese warrior society because of his role as protector of animals, especially horses.
The lacquer and its meticulously carved rock out crop symbolized base is an exquisite example of the revival of traditional crafts from the early Edo period. Bato surfaces are gorgeously covered with gold leaf with an intricate hemp-leaf pattern. Finally a fine perforated cut metal jewelry like necklace was added- these rarely survive from great age.
We acquired it from a large Japanese collection this past year from one of our many buying trips.
Dimensions: 17 inches tall and 5 inches wide
Possibilities: It would look perfect indoors in your special tokonoma (Japanese alcove) , shrine, or mediation space.
