The Cochiti pueblo is on the west bank of the Rio Grande River, between Santa Fe and Albuquerque, New Mexico. This pueblo is very
old and was in existance before the Spanish Colonial era. The late prehistoric pueblo ruins at Bandelier National Monument are the Cochiti pueblo’s ancestral home. Tradition includes them as part of the prehistoric Anasazi culture.
In prehistoric times, human effigy pots, animal and human figures, figural canteens, and bird-shaped pitchers with beaks as spouts, were made by the Native Americans at Cochiti. When the Spanish arrived in the 16th century many of these figures were condemned as idols and destroyed by the Spaniards.
