Unusual eleven-arm depiction
This is a scarce Japanese temple find, a gold gilt and lacquered wooden ten armed Kanon, Guan yin and Bodhisattva standing tall and with multiple arms and hands in assisting sentient beings around the world. These among others, symbolically signify compassion and healing powers.
It is signed front and back in red lacquer with posthumous Buddhist names- a feature rarely found today. Please note this is priced attractively because it is missing one arm and has a missing piece on back side
Kannon, or Kuanyin, is the bodhisattva of compassion—known in male form as Avalokitehvara or Chenrezig. Kuanyin’s name means “the one who hears the cries of the world.” Sometimes a Guan yin statue is depicted with a “thousand” arms and hands. This is because it’s said her head split open ten times in succession when she saw the suffering of the world, and Amitabha gave her one extra head and many arms in order to save all suffering sentient beings.
The lacquer and its meticulously carved rock out crop symbolized base is an exquisite example of the revival of traditional crafts from the early Edo period. Her surfaces are gorgeously covered with gold leaf with an intricate hemp-leaf pattern.
