History:
Fudo Myo-o, “the Immovable One” or “Achala Vidyaraja”, is a powerful deity in Japanese Buddhism and folk religion. His name means “the immovable or unshakable one”, and he is one of five “myo-o”, or lords of light, who protect the Law of Buddhism with their threatening appearance. Fudo Myo-o is believed to guide spiritual travelers past temptation on their path to enlightenment.
Fudo Myo-o is often depicted as a fierce guardian with a sword in his right hand and a rope in his left, sitting in front of a swirling flame of fire. The sword is used to cut through ignorance, and the rope is used to bind up evil spirits and pull people towards the path of salvation. Fudo Myo-o’s heavy shoulders and back are planted firmly on his stiffened legs, symbolizing his steadfastness and strength. He also has a menacing expression, bulging eyes, and fangs, which indicate his power to vanquish all demons.
Fudo Myo-o is a popular icon of Vajrayana Buddhism in Japan. He is also a good deity in the Shinto religion, where he is believed to drive away evil spirits
