Unusual Five Arm Depiction
This is a scarce and lovely Japanese temple find, a gold gilt and lacquered wooden five armed Kanon, Guan yin and Bodhisattva standing tall and with multiple arms and hands in assisting sentient beings around the world. These among others, symbolically signify compassion and healing powers. This one holds the staff of life.
It is signed front and back in red lacquer with posthumous Buddhist names- a feature rarely found today.
Kannon, or Kuanyin, is the bodhisattva of compassion—known in male form as Avalokitehvara or Chenrezig. Kuanyin’s name means “the one who hears the cries of the world.” Sometimes a Guan yin statue is depicted with a “thousand” arms and hands. This is because it’s said her head split open ten times in succession when she saw the suffering of the world, and Amitabbha gave her one extra head and many arms in order to save all suffering sentient beings.
The lacquer and its meticulously carved rock out crop symbolized base is an exquisite example of the revival of traditional crafts from the early Edo period. Her surfaces are gorgeously covered with gold leaf with an intricate hemp-leaf pattern. Finally a fine perforated cut metal jewelry like necklace was added- these rarely survive from great age.
