History of Tang’s Female Court Polo Players:
New freedom given to females in ancient Tang China meant that upper class females wearing trousers joined their male or foreign team members on the polo field. Polo was introduced into China from Central Asia. The Chinese contributed to the sport by perfecting the fully formed “flying gallop” effigy such as this wonderful sculpture, and form including saddle and stirrups. An 8th century mural depicting a game of polo was found in the tomb of Li Xian (Crown Prince Zhanghuai (654 – 684).
