This is an authentic Chinese ancient jade bi disc from the Han dynasty (220 BC- 220AD) This comes from our private ancient Chinese jade collection which was formed over the past thirty years..
China, an imperial jade Bi Disk, 24.5cm, 9.5” diameter, Han dynasty (2200-1700 BCE) the well polished large round ritual jade of medium green color finely incised with three registers including two registers of animal mask decoration separated by a register of cross hatched “grain” separated by thin rope patterns the while unevenly toned.
Examined by Gu Fang, Senior Fellow of the Institute of Archeology, Beijing Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS). Jade bi and cong are regarded as cosmological symbols and as signifiers of status and wealth. It was post neolithic China and during the Shang period and later that jade craftsmen began incising jade bi with varying motifs- from simple lines to fantastic imagery as on this Han dynasty example
Jades from this period are handmade, engraved using metal tools which were available at that time, and then hand polished. This type of polished jade was created for important wealthy individuals including royalty. The engraved design includes cross hatching, yak, steer or bison horns, and tao tie mask representations common for that day.
We guarantee its authenticity.
