The Moon hare usagi is a mythical figure in Far Eastern folklore. This folklore originated in China and then spread to other Asian cultures. It is thought to live on the Moon that identify the hare with the moon’s dark markings. The rabbit is seen as pounding with a mortar and pestle – pounding the elixir of life for consumption and show hand production of mochi. In Japanese and Korea the rabbit is pounding these ingredients for mochi rice cakes.
