Important ancient Imperial China Ming tomb horse and rider, 1368-1644, 15 inches in height. Crafted in a stunning amber and green color glaze.
This horseman and his steed is one of a small group of fine quality glazed figurines recently available from an old European collection and originally collected in Hong Kong in the 1990’s. Look for other listings offering more important works from this Fine collection.
The pleasant faced gentleman is dressed in a tunic with long sleeves, his hands in front of his mid section while seated erect in his horse’ saddle. The horse standing four square and well decorated with bridle and ornaments of the period. The whole is beautifully glazed in stunning amber and green colors – including highlights in original red and black cold painted pigments – a superior feature not often found on these works of art and representative of an important tomb which deserved highest quality pottery votive representations. The head is attachable as often seen on the largest figures from this period.
Important large-scale sculptures such as this one were placed in tombs of the elite and wealthy as significant accompaniment in the after life

History:
The Ming dynasty then known as the Empire of the Great Ming ruled China for 276 years (1368–1644) following the collapse of the Mongol-led Yuan dynasty. This dynasty has been described as one of the greatest eras of orderly government and social stability in human history and was the last imperial dynasty in China ruled by ethnic Han Chinese.
