Important ancient Imperial China Ming tomb treasure attendant, 1368-1644
This large attendant caressing a symbolic disc or serving plate depicting Yin Yang and is one of a small group of monumental attendants recently available from an old European collection and originally collected in Hong Kong in the 1990s. Look for other listings offering more important works from this fine collection.
The pleasant faced gentleman is dressed in a tunic and long gown with long sleeves, his hands in front of his chest caressing the Yin Yang plate or disc surely an accoutrement of the elite and wealthy of the time. He is beautifully glazed in green and cream colors highlighted by original red and black pigments – a superior feature not often found on these works of art and representative of an important tomb which deserved highest quality pottery votive representations. The head is attachable as often seen on the largest figures from this period.
