This is a wonderful handmade, hand-painted and hand glazed few- of- a- kind, Mid-Century Modern ceramic bowl of Birds and a Young Girl designed by master designer Marianne Starck for Michael Andersen and Son. On location at the isle of Bornholm, Denmark, from 1950s-1960s.
It is an important work of art crafted and hand fired in the -Persian Craqueleure Technique- after Daniel Andersen (who received a 1935 Gold Medal for the world exhibition in Brussels).
Its handsome rectangular, slightly curved shallow bowl style was executed in a Mosaic-like (cracelée glaze) in colors of ox blood red, green and pale ochre. Its a lovely piece marked on back with an impressed three herring mark and inscribed with MS for Marianne Starck, and model no 5696/1.
Spectacular design, lovely vivid colors, good opportunity to collect as few exist today.

History of the MandS Kiln
MandS was founded by the potter Jens Michael Andersen in 1890.
The oldest son Daniel Folkmann Andersen (1885-1959) was the most creative and artistic of the four and from 1905 he put his stamp on the artistic development of the factory. In 1935 Daniel Andersen’s innovation "the Persia Technique" received the Gold Medal at the World Exhibition in Brussels. Stoneware in the clean and pure style of the time were produced from 1950 and through the 70’s all shaped and decorated by the artist Marianne Starck.
