China, this is a beautiful tall 49″ high example of a Chinese Lingbi viewing stone or scholar rock mounted in a custom hand-carved rosewood base.
Provenance: Old Shanghai collection acquired, circa 1998.
Lingbi stones are also called ‘resonant rocks’ (bayinshi). They were sometimes used for making chimes and are thus also known as ‘chime rocks’. Lingbi rocks are beautiful and clear-cut, with a frame of soft lines. They are now hard to find as harvesting them is now prohibited. Our giant natural specimen comes from a forty year old private Chinese collection.
This specimen would make a perfect garden or entry path installation. Please see below for more historical information about these fascinating works of art.
