History of Japanese Owls:
In Japanese culture, owls (fukurou 梟) symbolize good luck, protection from misfortune, and wisdom, largely due to a wordplay where “fuku” (福) means luck. The indigenous Ainu people of Hokkaido revered the Blakiston’s fish owl as a village protector and a messenger to the gods, known as Kotan koru Kamuy, reflecting an ancient belief system. This positive association contrasts with earlier, Chinese-influenced views of owls as bad omens, while their adoption as symbols of knowledge and technology was a more recent, Meiji-era development.
