Japan, an unusual and handsome red stone spirit lantern in a mountain style and measuring: 35 inches high and 24 inches wide at bottom, four pieces and with blue lichen.
Showa period mid 20th century
The dark bluish patina from weathering and appropriate age .
This striking and well proportioned hand carved lantern is fashioned from a lighter weight stone for easier portability- Its stone roof kasa and light chamber and base Hibukuro or kiso all with patina from age.
Provenance: old Japanese garden, near Kyoto.

History of Spirit lanterns:
