Fresh find from our recent Japanese acquisition travels, large 22″ length
Japan, a large scale antique finely hand carved cherry wood “kashigata” sugar cake mold in the form of a fish, two pieces, 22″ length, #3.
Taisho period, 1910. Collectible or Immediately usable.
This antique 100 year old Japanese sugar cake mold known as a kashigata was hand crafted in the form of a very large Japanese fish, a red snapper. Red snapper or Tai fish symbolize celebrations: birthdays, anniversaries or weddings. This hand crafted mold was carved from wild cherry wood.
The actual cake made from soy flower and sugar dough- was pressed into the mold. When the dough dried, the cake, in the form of a positive image of the tai fish, would easily pop out. The large cake or cookie was then broken up for all celebrants to enjoy.
A very collectible culinary artwork and a fully functional culinary delight.
Photographed in natural day light.
