Daikoku’s Hat- A Great Collectible and Displayable Artifact From Old Japan
A beautiful wooden jizaigake, or pothook hanger. This type is called Daikoku, named after one of Japan’s seven lucky gods, after the shape of Daikoku’s hat. These hangers were suspended with a rope from a heavy beam, over the open hearth. From the hanger an adjustable hook was hung that held the kettle. It is also a fine work of art in the “mingei” folk art (art of people) form. Zelkova wood with traces or black , especially in the grooves.
An Impressive sculpture in size and possessing a gorgeous original patina from authentic use- note the old rope surface wear on the”inside of the “hook” – clear signs of authentic old use.
