This is an antique Japanese Edo period 1850 chado (tea ceremony) woodblock print book. This book contains dozens of different hand drawn pictures of tools and vessels used during tea ceremony.
All pages are hand made by using wood block prints and using two pages per print . This book contains about 50 of these pages.
The paper this book is made of took over 200 days to make and is made of the inner bark of the gampi (mulberry) tree to last virtually indefinitely. The book was then hand bound with traditional Japanese 4 hole binding .
A rare find. This is an original Japanese 19th century woodblock book -Chaya Hyoko Shu- on Tea. Includes numerous pages of tea utensils, tea labels, brand names and famous tea masters. Dozens of plates featuring chagama water containers, tea kettles, tea pots, tea utensils plus descriptions of Japan’s most important tea masters, tea logos, and much more.
The woodblock prints are block style kanji common to the cultural elite of the day. The mulberry washi paper of these books took over 200 days to make and are made of the inner bark of the gampi (mulberry) tree to last virtually indefinitely. These books were hand bound with traditional Japanese 4 hole binding (see photos).
Despite its age, the calligraphy is still very clear, and the pages turn easily. Having been in storage for almost a century and a half.
