Japan waterscape screen “Brilliant Seaside Overlook serene summer lake waters” with lofty sailing vessels- a folding two-panel screen byobu measures 87.5″ in length and 71.5” in height, Late Taisho to early Showa Period, 1930, signed Segai. Painting in ink and mineral colors on silk. Red lacquered wood frame.
A bell tower, pagoda, Kasuga stone lantern, and a small tea plantation far right suggesting an origin at Nanya or Shikoku dot the finer points of this superb summertime painting. This body of water may be Lake Biup or the inland sea at Shikoku. Due to the war years 1933-1945 much of Japans artistic records were lost though this epic work feels like a monumental effort that may have been created for a major exhibition.
This work of art represents an important “bridge” from Taisho to Showa period art forms combining the best of Showa’s sedate attitude with the lofty, airy, and realistic ideals of Taisho. Provenance: Old New England Collection.
