A fine Japanese hard to find antique Samurai Spear Yari crafted in rich black makie lacquer with prolific gold clan symbols, vines, and mist; 98 inches in length
and dating to the late Edo period, circa 1840.
A rare find still in remarkable condition.
Early yari are believed to have been derived from Chinese spears, these hoko yari are thought to be from the Nara period (710-794), and while they were present in early Japan’s history, the term yari appeared for the first time in about 1334 and became popular in the late 15th century. During the peaceful Edo era, the finer lacquered yari were produced by renown sword smiths often as coveted presentation and ceremonial weaponry.
