A fine early small-scale Japanese antique hand-painted six-panel folding screen byobu conceived in a convenient size 19.5 inches high and 52.5 inches length.

Lovely vivid colors feature classic colorful spring and summer subject matter: Rich gold mist back ground with Mandarin duck family, a bird of paradise, cherry tree, flowers galore and mountains and blue waters, pigment on paper.
Smaller size makes this lovely one eminently installable.
Comes as found with original black lacquer frame with original blue brocade border, original backing paper plus an original wooden storage box, rarely found this way, a tomobako – just the way we like to find them.
These smaller scale screens sometimes called -Hina- or doll screens, and are ideal for small wall areas in tea rooms or alcoves tokonoma (toko-no-ma), or simply toko (?), which is a built-in recessed space in a Japanese style reception room, in which items for artistic appreciation are displayed.
Age: Meiji period, 1868-1912.
