This is an early, fine and rare hand carving of the immortal sage Gama Sennin with his head entwined with his trusted pal and sage: The three legged money toad.
Hand-carved of a very hard hinoki (cypress) wood it measures a substantial 18 inches high and dates 150-200 years ago to the early 19th century Edo period.

History:
The Japanese legend of Gama Sennin (蝦蟇仙人 and his Toad Immortal is based upon Chinese Liu Hai (劉海), a fabled 10th-century alchemist who learned the secret of immortality from the Chan Chu his three-legged -Money Toad while wandering in the mountainside.
