Japan, a fine six-panel screen Byobu depicting 6 magnificent horses executed in black sumi ink on a silver ground. They are rendered in attractive and unusual positions. This attractive screen dates to the Meiji period, 19th century.

Horses are a scarce motif for Japanese screens and we are pleased to have found this one from our last Japanese acquisitions.
It is simple yet beautifully painted with extraordinary facial and mane details on a handsome silver leaf background all created by a skillful artist painter. Signed with red seals.
