Japan Four Antique Hand Carved Kimono Stencils, 19th century, Immediately Frameable #1
Hand cut from mulberry paper and originally found in Nagoya, Japan
During the late Edo period (1800-1850) kimono manufactuerers thrived and designers created expressive unique and exquisite designs- hand carved into mulberry paper. These were used as stencils to transfer creative artistry of that period onto fabric kimono. – a paste resist process for dyeing fabric .
These stencils are rare one-of-a-kind survivors. Please note that some have authentic old worm holes in the paper- proof of their great age.
All prints come individually and safely placed on wrapped protective foam core boards.
A total of four (4) different stencils are included (see photos).
Provenance: an old Nagoya, Japan collection
Extraordinary treasure find. Instant collection, may be individually framed.
Good gift idea.
You will love these prints.
