100% original with unusual hand wrought “flying birds” hardware

This is an antique handcrafted wooden chest tansu with fine lines and a multitude of storage features and options. It is in remarkably clean original “natural” condition. It consists of two sections- strong yet surprisingly light weight and easy to move around.

It is 100% original and is in virtually mint condition with the Kiri (princess tree) wood in fine shape.

A fine Japanese antique five drawer two section Tansu (two sections stacked upon one another) with simple horizontal drawers and with original hand wrought -flying bird- hardware.

Meiji Period, circa 1860s-1880s.

Leave it to the Japanese master craftsmen to create this amazing practical and useful storage chest crafted from natural kiri wood. Also known as Paulownia, the Japanese kiri specifically refers to P. tomentosa; it is also known as the “princess tree”. It was once customary to plant a Paulownia tree when a baby girl was born, and then to make it into a dresser as a wedding present when she married. Paulownia is also the mon (clan symbol) of the office of prime minister and also serves as the emblem of the cabinet and the government (vis-à-vis the chrysanthemum being the Imperial Seal of Japan).

Provenance: from a Japanese second generation family who are antique tansu specialists from Yamagata, Northern Japan

Note: this is a two section double tansu one three-drawer section top and a separate larger two-drawer section on bottom. They stack upon each other with the convenient aid of iron side handles. This beautiful chest can either be stacked on top of on one another or separated and used as a nightstand or side table.
