Kasuga lanterns take their name from Kasuga Shrine (Kasuga-taisha) in Nara, Japan which was the capital of Japan from 710 to 784 CE. An impressive display of several thousand Kasuga lanterns may be seen in Nara at the Kasuga shrine and “Deer Park”. Kasuga lanterns were often gifted to the shrine on behalf of families and important personages. The kasuga lantern’ are usually crafted from six pieces of stone: a base and platform are hexagonal in outline and have lotus petal designs, while its shaft is cylindrical, and the firebox (lamp housing ) is usually hexagonal as well.
