Japan, a six-panel screen Byobu depicting Sailing Boats on blue waters. This attractive screen dates to the Taisho period.
Sail boating is a scarce motif for Japanese screens and we are pleased to have found this one on our last Japanese acquisitions travels.
It is simple yet beautifully painted with a handsome gold mist background created by a skillful artist painter.
Dimensions: 68 high and 144 inches wide extended.
Enticing and rare subject matter, this painting is skilfully and tastefully rendered in mineral paint pigments on paper and with a muted soft gold mist tone painted background. The original silk brocade border is present. Black lacquered wood with engraved bronze corner mounts nicely frame this serene and rare equine composition. There is some wear on lower areas.
