An older portable scale handmade and hand glazed pair (2) big bellied Folk Art Hero Tanuki sake vessels – raccoon dog ceramic party animals from old Japan.
Thee heavy duty, thick glazed potter works of art each brandish a sake bottle in one hand and a sheaf of paper pages (order pads) in the other. The top page is marked with a character KAYOI, which translates as “order book”, so these tanuki act as a sake vendors!
Notable are their protruding bellies with exaggerated genitals.
Dimensions: 5.75 inches tall and 4 inches diameter.

The Japanese raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides viverrinus), also known as tanuki in Japanese, is a subspecies of the Asian raccoon dog. As tanuki, this animal has been significant in Japanese folklore since ancient times. The legendary tanuki is reputed to be mischievous and jolly- a master of disguise and shape shifting, but some what gullible and absent minded. It is also a common theme in Japanese art, especially statuary and can be commonly seen in businesses as cultural symbols.
