China a fine hand-carved figure and wall fragment of a flying Aspara Angel, limestone, Qing Dynasty, (1644-1912)
Dimensions: 10.5 inches in height and 16 inches width
The well carved figure and effigy, carved from a slab of thick limestone is a fragment from a larger panel. It displays the Aspara’s elaborate head dress and wings against a course hand chiseled ground with hair coif ,slanted eyes, and fleshy cheeks well defined. The ancient stone now showing significant surface encrustation from good age.

An Apsara (also spelled as Apsarasa) is a female spirit of the clouds and waters in Hindu and Buddhist mythology. It is often thought of as an angel for the afterlife.
