China, a rare and remarkable hand carved stone pair (2) of male and female figures from the Han dynasty (206 BCE-220 CE).
Dimensions: tallest is 34 inches tall 8 inches wide
Provenance:
Hand carved from a brown and gray colored stone, this remarkable pair were originally found near Chong Qing , near the Three Gorges and the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers.
This was a river culture and the pair appear to represent an important male and female with frog effigies carved onto the top of their heads and human servants a top turtle or foo dogs, beneath. In addition, what appears to be the male figure (figure on right) possesses on his back what appears to be an incised symbolic inscription within a square frame.
Condition: original old patina with multiple surface encrustations from appropriate ancient age. Some minor damage to the base of one figure. (see close up photos)
