Important Ancient Japanese Tall Elite Haniwa Model Horse ,Kofun period (593-710 AD)
This large model horse sculpture was crafted in low fired reddish clay and boldly modeled with saddle, stirrups, bridle, and ornamental trappings of the period. Finally a portion of the mane is tied as a knot at the forehead.
Dimensions: 36.5 inches tall and 35 inches length
Provenance: old San Francisco western collection originally collected prior to 1970

About Japan’s Ancient Kofun period:
Important large-scale sculptures such as this one were placed in tombs of the elite and wealthy as significant status symbols emblematic of ruling classes.
Kofun burial mounds , distinctive earthen structures, were burial mounds built for the people of the ruling class during the 3rd to 7th centuries in Japan. Kofun mounds contained large stone burial chambers. Unglazed pottery figures called Haniwa were often buried under the circumference of the kofun.
