From Japan, comes this superb antique hand cast bronze temple bell mounted in a handcrafted “Wood Tower” of classical form. The bell dating 19th century and mounted in a Japanese master craftsmen custom designed wooden tower,
Tower dimensions: 84″ H (above ground) x 36″ wide x 12″ deep; bronze bell 17″ H and 8″ D.
This remarkable bronze bell and survivor would have been suspended in places of prayer or under temple eaves for ringing via rope to awaken the gods and call monks to court. The superb custom designed Japanese craftsmen wooden tower is constructed in cedar, mahogany and ironwood. The Japanese master craftsman who designed and constructed the tower for us did so with innovation and exquisite detail. For example, the upright poles of white cedar / one is round and other is square / representing the Ying and yang of life or the earth and cosmos. The cross beam is actually a finely fitted medley of three thin boards of perfectly orchestrated mahogany and in of itself a delight to the eye. The horizontal striker that slides effortlessly to ring the bell was crafted and hand planed of ironwood. The roof of red cedar and the bell rope tie carefully knotted in the most aesthetic, Japanese appreciation way. All in all an amazingly blend of contemporary artisan craftsmanship with a beautiful example of bronze 19th century hand casting all constructed on a slim foot print measuring 36″ wide x 12″ deep x 84″‘ high. (Note the two poles extend about 24″ into the ground, so total length of the poles is 108″ to allow for in ground installation). This bell tower is one of a kind and is signed lower base. A similar old wooden bell tower exists near Mount Fuji and served as its inspiration.
