Another scarce gem plucked from an old Japanese garden

Japan, a fine and amazing surviving hokyointo stupa sculpted in three pieces in a convenient portable size from a gray-brown sedimentary stone. This one dates to the 18th century. An architectural gem for display indoors or outdoors in your favorite place.

Measuring: 24″ high and 10″ wide, this uniquely Japanese stupa form, the hokyointo, takes its name from the Hokyo Darani sutra, copies of which were placed inside Heian Period 8th century stupas in this style made from wood or bronze. From 12th century on during the Kamakura Period (13th century), hokyo sculpted from stone began to be used as commemorative markers particularly of important personages.
