Japanese temple find from the Taisho period, early 20th century.
A very large hand-carved wooden chanting drum mokugyo, a fish form wooden percussion instrument and chanting gong once used in zen temples in chanting sessions. This example is a special one of a kind Mingei Folk Art form. We have never seen one like this.
Taisho period (1912-1926). A striker is included.
Dimensions: 14 inches tall and 12 inches wide
This wooden instrument was authentically used by monks and laity involving the recitation of sutras, mantras, or other Buddhist texts. It serves to keep rhythm during sutra chanting often when chanting name Amitabha. Usage wear appropriate for its good age and genuine use.
