Japan, an authentic, handsome, and very rare old one-of-a-kind medium sized hand-carved granite stone lantern, carved from solid granite stone, two pieces (includes the rectangular base with arched “firefly” windows and thickly carved sloped roof kasa), great old Patina from age, Edo-Meiji period (1850-1880s)
Dimensions: roughly 16″ high and 15.5″ diameter.
This is a rare “firefly” water lantern mizubotaru toro, infrequently found in Japan. The name possibly originates from a famous Japanese novel The Tale of Genji or other folk tales that relate how the light in a lantern like this is reflected through the apertures reminding us of “fireflies” flying over the water during evening!
This lantern would make an ideal choice for any intimate indoor or outdoor installation. The darkened and lichen roof shows great garden Patina from appropriate exposure and weatherization and great age.
Many of our customers place “oil candles” inside the main section making a romantic and enjoyable decorative accent for entertaining friends and family. It’s a perfect choice for your indoor or outdoor garden space.
This lantern comes from an older Japanese Kyoto area garden.
We are members of the North American Japanese Garden Association (NAJGA) specializing for ten years now in old and authentic Japanese stone garden ornaments.
