About Japan’s Ancient Kofun period:
Important large-scale ancient horsde sculptures were placed in tombs of the elite and wealthy as significant status symbols emblematic of ruling classes.
Kofun burial mounds , distinctive earthen structures, were burial mounds built for the people of the ruling class during the 3rd to 7th centuries in Japan. Kofun mounds contained large stone burial chambers. Unglazed pottery figures called Haniwa were often buried under the circumference of the kofun.
