This is an old beautifully and sensually hand-carved 44.5 inch tall Japanese granite stone effigy of Kannon Guan Yin or the Goddess of Mercy. She stands tall and fashioned with fine flowing robes. She clutches a scroll (as in the teaching of Buddha) and wears a rosary bead necklace. Her robes seemingly dance in the wind!

Dating to the early 20th century, it comes from a discerning American Cape area Asian Japanese garden collection and is of a size and quality that seldom becomes available to the public even in East Asia!

Notice the attractive old surface patina- a sign of good age. Well cared for, this sculpture would be an excellent garden or indoor sculptural choice possessing a genuine spiritual aura.

History of Guan Yin:

In Asia, Guan Yin is revered as a kind compassionate Bodhisattva and protector of children. Her necklace or rosary is associated with her calls upon Buddha for succor, each bead of it representing all living beings and the turning of the beads symbolizes that Guan Yin is leading them out of their state of misery and repeated rounds of rebirth into nirvana, hence the beads represent enlightenment. Should a book or scroll of papers be within the portrayal, it is representing the Dharma, the teaching of Buddha or the sutra, the Buddhist text Guan Yin is said to have constantly recited from.
