This is a hard to find pair (2) of solid and finely cast effigies of tall “moon gazing” garden rabbits, usagi. They were sourced from a large American Japanese garden collection this past year. The tallest measures 9 inches tall.

These charming older ones still possess old gilt and tan finishes that originally came from a Japanese maker. Notice the tallest one with the attractive elongated and floppy ears.

They are heavily cast and possess an original handsome gilt and verdigris patina.

They would surely “pop” out in splendid fashion in your favorite indoor gallery or garden spot!

Moon Gazing Rabbit
The Moon rabbit or Moon hare usagi is a mythical figure in Far Eastern folklore. This folklore originated in China and then spread to other Asian cultures. It is thought to live on the Moon that identify the hare with the moon’s dark markings. The rabbit is seen with a mortar and pestle – pounding the elixir of life for consumption and show hand production of mochi. In Japanese and Korea the rabbit is pounding these ingredients for mochi rice cakes.
