Japan, unusual antique bronze lantern, untouched, with a cicada on handle and rarely seen pierced “moon and cloud” fire box bronze sheet panels, circa 1850.
We offer this find with traces of its old and original black lacquered metal surfaces plus old paper inserts applied to the inside of the firebox.

Cicadas ring in the “chirping” sounds of summer !
Cicadas are found in classical Japanese literature such as in Murasaki Shikibu’s “The Tale of Genji,” one of the first women to ever resist the titular protagonist is known as 空蝉 (Utsusemi or “empty cicada”, Cicada hunting is still a popular summer pastime for small and big kids.
