Japanese Imperial Emperor’s Sterling Silver “Lantern” Keepsake Box- Gift from the Showa Emperor 1928
This lovely lantern shaped box was given to distinguished guests by Showa Emperor of Japan on November 17 of the year Showa 3 (1928) on the occasion of his inauguration as emperor. The top features a gilt design of a sixteen petal chrysanthemum crest which is the emblem of the Imperial Family. The bottom is marked for pure silver and “Ikoma”. Ikoma was a town in Nara known to specialize in the manufacture of these boxes.
Silver treasure boxes like this one were given to dignitaries and special guests on official Imperial Household occasions. This box is photographed and documented in the official catalog: Bonbonniere-Imperial Silver Bonbonnieres (2009) ISBN: 4872422066 (See photo)
