Japanese Imperial Emperor’s Sterling Silver “Torii Shrine Gate” Keepsake Box- Gift from the Showa Emperor 1938
This lovely Shinto Shrine “Torii Gate” themed box featuring a Shinto shrine tori gate floating among clouds and above pine trees was given to distinguished guests by Showa Emperor of Japan on December 3 of the year Showa 10 (1938) on the occasion of an official event. The top features a gilt design of a sixteen petal chrysanthemum crest which is the emblem of the Imperial Family. The bottom is marked for pure silver and “Ikoma”. Ikoma was a town in Nara known to specialize in the manufacture of these boxes.
Silver treasure boxes like this one were given to dignitaries and special guests on official Imperial Household occasions. This box is photographed and documented in the official catalog: Bonbonniere-Imperial Silver Bonbonnieres (2009) ISBN: 4872422066 (See photo)
