Japanese Imperial Emperor’s Sterling Silver “Torii Shrine Gate” Keepsake Box- Gift from the Showa Emperor 1938
This lovely Shinto Shrine “Torii Gate” themed box featuring a Shinto shrine tori gate floating among clouds and above pine trees was given to distinguished guests by Showa Emperor of Japan on December 3 of the year Showa 10 (1938) on the occasion of an official event. The top features a gilt design of a sixteen petal chrysanthemum crest which is the emblem of the Imperial Family. The bottom is marked for pure silver and “Ikoma”. Ikoma was a town in Nara known to specialize in the manufacture of these boxes.
