Simple Memorial Buddha

In Japan, Kṣitigarbha, known as Jizō, or respectfully as Ojizō-sama, is one of the most loved of all Japanese divinities. His statues are a common sight, especially by roadsides and installed in private shrines.

This handsome hand carved example is sculpted from solid medium gray stone, still retains much of its oldpatina and and dates to the 19th century. The lower frontal area appears to have purposely had some of the kanji defaced to disguise likely the recipients name.

Good garden candidate with an authentic even patina and sublime spiritual aura.

Condition : overall softening of lines and contours.
Handsomely weathered from appropriate age.
