Japan, an unusual and handsome red black stone spirit lantern in rustic style hand carved and measuring: 28 inches high and 18 inches wide at bottom, two pieces.
Showa period mid 20th century
The dark reddish black patina from weathering and appropriate age .
The striking and well proportioned hand carved sculpture is fashioned from as volcanic stone as roof kasa and light chamber or base Hibukuro or kiso all with substantial patina from good age.
Provenance: old Japanese garden, near Kyoto.
