Unusual opportunity to collect an authentic superb hand cast nautical treasure, 18″ tall

From an old west coast collection comes this hard to find Japanese finely cast bronze sculpture of a crab fisherman likely displaying his catch of the venerable “horse show” crab. The rare statue depicts the fisherman shouldering a wicker basket full of crab and seemingly proudly displays one of these sea creatures in his right hand. Other fine details include his grass rope tied skirt, simple cap, and fisherman’s sandles. All mounted an irregular rock outcrop display base. This sculpture features an attractive olive green and lichen patina from appropriate age.

About the Japanese Horse shoe crab

The horsehair crab, Erimacrus isenbeckii (Japanese: ケガニ, kegani), is a species of crab which is found mainly in the Northwest Pacific, around the Hokkaido coast in the Sea of Okhotsk and the Western Bering Sea and is an important commercial species used in Japanese cuisine. Despite its importance, the catch for the species reached a peak in the 1950s at 27,000 tons and has decreased since, reaching 2,000 tons in 2003. Due to the commercial importance of the species, many stock enhancement programs have been utilized to help maintain a successful fishery.
