History of Japanese “Yukimi” lanterns:
The Yukimi stone lantern or snow viewing or water reflection lantern (yukimi doro), first appeared during the early Edo period (1603-1867). It is believed to have been used to mark water features sometimes displayed on peninsular land masses. These traditional Japanese lanterns are essential to give authenticity grace to a Japanese garden. The lantern has no shaft and instead rests on three or four legs that arch outward from its base. It usually sits relatively low to the ground and lends a sense of stability to landscapes. This style of lantern is so named because it shows its best under a mantle of snow. Although “Yukimi” is the Japanese custom of “snow-viewing”, the original Japanese character may have meant water reflection or ”floating light”.
