From an old Pennsylvania collection comes this remarkable unique early pyrography American survivor.
This American tall round lidded box may have been a wedding present and intended for use for storing sewing materials, as a humidor for tobacco, or simply a safe keeping valuables box during the early to mid 19th century. The incised figures of a man and wife plus a church and stately appealing manor house offer suggestions.
Carefully carved, crafted and incised , it has been painstakenly wood burned on its lid, and with side bands and cartouches depicting a mustached gentleman, an elegantly dressed lady (perhaps his wife) , a stately home, and a church all carefully incised with an early American motif It also possesses unusual clasps for the lid, extended feet, and three unusual whimsical knobs on top suggesting a special gift and purpose.
This all original work of art it is finely hand incised and hand stained using pyrographic techniques. The resulting fine pyrography with its warm honey brown color with aged crackled surfaces enhance its desirability.
The craftsmanship and details are unusually fine for such an early work of art.
