Important ancient Imperial China Ming military horse rider brandishing an unusual form of medieval grenade, a Chinese invention, 1368-1644.
Crafted in stunning turquoise and cobalt blue color glazes.
The man and his steed is part of a small group of fine quality glazed figurines recently available from an old European collection and originally collected in Hong Kong in the 1990s. Look for other listings offering more important works from this fine collection.
The pleasant faced man are dressed in a tunic with long sleeves, his hands in front while seated erect in their horse’ saddle and clutching a grenade armament- glazed tomb attribute. The horse standing four square and well decorated with bridle and ornaments of the period. The whole is beautifully glazed in stunning turquoise and cobalt blue colors – including highlights in original red and black cold painted pigments, a superior feature not often found on these works of art and representative of an important tomb which deserved highest quality pottery votive representations. The head is attachable as often seen on the largest figures from this period.
Important large-scale sculptures such as this one were placed in tombs of the elite and wealthy as significant accompaniment in the afterlife.
Blue and turquoise glazed sculptures from the Ming period are genuinely rarer particularly in this Fine quality.
