Find here a gorgeous, elegant pair of “Lotus Flower” Bronze lanterns from Showa Era (mid century) Japan,
newly electrified for immediate use! Sizable at 19″h x 14″w, they were finely handcrafted and signed underneath
one of the top sections: Hamano Koji for ancestors, Showa 43, Autumn 1963. Wonderful patina and attractive surface
engravings of waves, clouds, flowers and vines from copper/bronze sheet. In Japan, toro (lanterns) were used
only in Buddhist temples, where they illuminated the path and were considered asofferings. In it’s complete original form,
the lantern represents five elements of Buddhist cosmology, from the bottom working up:chi, sui, ka, fu, and ku.
