Japan marvelous, joyful six panel hand painted screen byobu of a lovely summer Matsuri festival in Nara, masterfully executed in ink and gold leaf on paper. It is framed with the original rich black silk brocade border and with the original lacquered bronze embellished black lacquer wooden frame. The original paper backing still remains to completes this masterpiece. More photographs are available upon request
Dimensions: each panel is 68.5 inches high and 24.25 inches wide. The total screen measures 145 inches wide.
Period: Edo about 1850
Quality: finely rendered in ink and gold leaf on paper. The rich gold leaf background and hand painted colors are original and vibrant. This is a remarkable survivor from 19th century Edo period Japan. A superb, clean example and we observe only one small 3.5 inch diameter tear, now under repair , to the far left upper most panel.
