Schneible Fine Arts (SFA) is pleased to announce an exhibition of rare Japanese antique woodblock flower prints as part of its Treasures from Asia II summer exhibition at the Asticou Inn, Northeast Harbor, Maine, August 1-September 6, 2011.
Collected by Douglas Schneible over the past year and from original books, the vibrant antique wood block flower prints are the work of Taisho era Japanese artist Tanigami Konan (1879-1928). In 1917 he assembled a vast array of popular European and American flowers and faithfully reproduced them in colored woodblock print form. They are richly rendered in superb detail and vibrant color. Konan’s woodblocks represent a pinnacle achievement in traditional Japanese woodblock “floral” artistry. He is considered one of the top Japanese artisans of the Shin Hanga or “new print” movement.
Printed on rice paper in a chuban size format (roughly 11″ x 14.5″) and professionally framed with UV protected glass, over fifty of these beautiful antique prints will be exhibited. Many of these rare prints are seldom available for sale and the exhibit will include dozens of different flowers : rose, tulips, Iris, hyacinth, Lily, violet, rose, columbine, daffodil, aster, petunia, and poppy just to name a few.
In addition, during the month of August, Schneible Fine Arts, a Shelburne, Vermont USA based Asian fine art gallery, will be presenting a special exhibition of antique and contemporary art and garden treasures that they have sourced from private collections in China, Japan, and the orient over the past decades.
