An early four step stone pagoda “stupa” from an old Japanese garden
Japan, a fine and amazing surviving pagoda stupa sculpted in two pieces in a convenient portable size from a gray- limestone. This one dates to the 18th century. It takes its name from Hokyo Darani Sutra, which were placed inside Heian Period 8th century stupas

Much original centuries old wear and patina still present appropriate to its great age.
Measuring: 21 inches high and 11 inches wide, this uniquely Japanese stupa form also known as a “hokyointo” takes its name from the Hokyo Darani sutra, copies of which were placed inside Heian Period 8th century stupas in this style made from wood or bronze. From 12th century on during the Kamakura Period (13th century), hokyo sculpted from stone began to be used as commemorative markers particularly of important personages. The four steps remind us of he original wooden pagodas that appear through out Japan.
This is a good gently weathered example from an old Nagoya garden.
